“Los antíguos llamaron “egiptanos” a ese pueblo errante y misterioso
que decía provenir del “Pequeño Egipto”. Pero el “Pequeño Egipto”
no figuraba en ningún mapa y a la vez parecía estar en todos lados.
Los egiptanos continuaron su camino, perdiendo algunas letras de su nombre
entre las ruedas de sus carretas.
Desde entonces la gente nos llamo “Gitanos”.
The ancients gave the name "egiptanos" for that wandering and mysterious people
that were said to come from "little Egypt". But "little Egypt" wasn't found on any map,
although at the same time appeared to be everywhere. The "egiptanos" continued
their course, losing some of the letters of their name between the wheels of their wagons.
Since then people have called us "gitanos".
