A brief semblance
In January 2003, Egiptanos were born (formerly Moorish Night). A music and dance ensemble founded in Mexico City by Lila Zellet-elías, in order to link the East and the West through music and dance. Since their first concert in April 2003, Egiptanos housed the expression and diversity of cultures in resistance, fostering intercultural dialogue, inclusion, coexistence and harmonious integration of identities.
Over time and through their interdisciplinary actions, Egiptanos become meaningful to the extent that they contribute to the social chance trrough art. In the musical and choreographic experimentation on their original cultures (Arabic, Gypsy Rrom and Mexican), they discover in the polyphonic dialogue present in Al Ándalus, a moment before the Mexican-indigenous Mexican miscegenation, and launches in a long career towards the integration of the Andalusian root to the Mexican culture, where, apart from several American cultures (Cuba, United States, Chile and Argentina), the Persian, Judeo-Hispanic (Sephardic) culture will converge
From here come an innumerable amount of recitals, concerts, presentations, recordings, videos, seminars and workshops, as well as six multimedia shows of large and medium format; other than two record productions.
In 2014, Egiptanos acquired legal personality and integrated as a civil association, in order to provide interdisciplinary artistic production with a legal personality capable of stimulating their administrative autonomy and ensuring the continuation of their artistic consolidation. According to deed number 35164, book 858 of the CDMX, the aforementioned company is intended; Disseminate promoting and promoting artistic disciplines that occur in Mexico: Performing arts (theater and dance) visual arts (painting, architecture, photography, installations and performances), concert and popular music; and the arts in video and cinema; in order to improve the living conditions of vulnerable groups and of every person. Likewise, the object is also to design, and give advice, evaluations, seminars and conferences on art (…) and in general everything related to human development.
Lines of action
Egiptanos, Arte y Consultoría A.C. It has focused its value on artistic expression and since its foundation has actively contributed to the production of national dance and music, attracting new audiences to the Mexican music and dance scene and today there are new challenges both nationally and internationally .
The association actively participates in the strengthening and construction of Mexican identity through the coexistence, respect and integration of its cultural plurality. From this bio-psycho-social, cultural and economic coexistence, two thematic lines that direct the association’s work have been defined over the years:
a) .- The inclusion of diversity through art and education.
b) .- The gender perspective. The empowerment of women and girls generated through the reflection promoted by art.
Through the creation, production, experimentation and artistic execution, Egyptians have hosted many other migrant cultures in Mexico and will continue to be a platform for harmonious participation. His works have been distinguished by specialized critics, as one of the most interesting presences on the Mexican stages, with special sensitivity and a keen instinct for what we call ‘Art’.
This association since 2003, operates in two main axes:
I.- The scenic creation line, whose artistic research and experimentation has produced an average of
2 shows per year in different formats.
II.- The line of training concentrated in Madrasat Al Mosharabía, a cultural center founded in 2004, dedicated to conserving, teaching and disseminating dance from its Arab and Gypsy (Rrom) cultures and, as well as its new expressions in Mexico. III. Since 2019, Egiptanos promote and disseminate research and dissemination of academic projects related to the cultural diversity of Mexico, through the International Meeting of Al Andalus in Mexico.
